Regional Representative

Assistant Regional Representative

Represent the interests of members residing within their region as a member of the Board of Directors, the governing body of the BJCP, and the best interests of the program.

Serve as an alternate contact for the BJCP for members in their region, with a focus on the local level.

Vote on issues, such as authorizing expenditures, allocating resources, setting policies and directions, creating and filling staff positions, and delegating responsibilities for day-to-day operations.

Ensure BJCP activities remain in alignment with the long-term goals of the program.  

Serve as an ambassador of the BJCP and promote the BJCP in a positive manner in their region and elsewhere.

Support members in their region by providing access to BJCP services or locating correct contacts.  Act on requests for services or information from members in their region.

Proactively interact with members at events like competitions, conferences, homebrew club meetings, beer-related events, the BJCP Facebook Group, BJCP Forums, or JudgeNet email list, and other resources to disseminate information, identify issues, new opportunities, and ideas for improvement and bring them to the Board for review and potential action.

Encourage non-members with good potential to become judges. Encourage active, motivated, and skilled members to become involved in BJCP activities and committees.

Recruit other members to administer exams, proctor exams, grade exams, coordinate continuing education events, and organize competitions. Direct members to local assistants. Mentor as necessary.

Contribute a summary of regional news and activities to the BJCP Newsletter, blog, and/or Annual Report.

Facilitate communication among the Assistant Regional Representatives through an email list or other electronic methods.  Coordinate Semiannual (at a minimum) conference calls with Assistant Regional Representatives to receive feedback from members (issues, kudos), seek advice, and exchange details of BJCP activities.

Participate in communications among the Assistant Regional Representatives and Regional Representatives on the email list and in conference calls. Arrange local advisory groups as needed.

Attend the National Homebrew Conference annually to participate in BJCP Board Meetings, BJCP Staff Meetings, and BJCP Members Meeting. If invited to judge, attend the GABF.

Attend the National Homebrew Conference annually, if feasible, to participate in BJCP Staff Meetings and the BJCP Members Meeting. Attend when the conference is relatively local.

Travel as necessary in support of developing the BJCP, support exam administration and proctoring, and other important program activities.

Be available to meet in person, on phone conferences, or electronically. Be responsive to communications, or advise other board members and interested people when out of communications (e.g., vacation, travel). Be computer-literate, able to use modern computer tools including learning new tools.

Attend BJCP Board and BJCP Staff events.

Attend BJCP Staff events, at least when in local region.

Send congratulatory emails to members who advance to National or Master ranks (CC Regional Rep). Ask if the member is interested in serving the organization in some capacity.

Identify target areas for potential expansion of the BJCP through hosting or proctoring exams in surrounding areas, especially if under-represented.

Participate on BJCP Committees and projects as appropriate.

Serve as a resource for competition organizers, exam organizers, and people who are interested in becoming judges. Answer questions. Provide support or help those people locate people willing to help them in person.

Attempt to resolve or mediate local disputes and escalate as necessary to the regional rep or other staff.
